  3. Pythagoras stated in his "Harmony of the Spheres" that 
  4. the universe was a giant sphere which encompassed the 
  5. Earth and the air around it:
  6.  
  7.  "The Sun, Moon, and planets revolve in concentric 
  8.   circles, each fastened to a sphere or wheel. The 
  9.   swift revolution of each of these bodies causes a 
  10.   swish, or musical hum, in the air. Evidently each 
  11.   planet will hum on a different pitch, depending on
  12.   the ratios of their respective orbits--just as the 
  13.   tone of a string depends upon its length. Thus the 
  14.   orbits in which the planets move form a kind of 
  15.   huge lyre whose strings are curved in circles."
